Unresolved conflict has a cost.
Most people underestimate what conflict left unresolved actually costs: financially, culturally and personally. It drains time, energy and focus from everyone it touches.
The impact rarely stays contained either. Conflict between two people affects the whole team, and the managers, HR professionals and leaders who step in to manage it are pulled away from the work they're actually there to do.
There's also a legal dimension. Unresolved conflict can constitute a psychosocial hazard that organisations have a duty to address. And when it does need to be addressed, mediation and coaching typically get better outcomes than formal processes and preserve relationships in the process.
